Sicilian Cart - Wonderful souvenir of Sicily

The history of the Sicilian Cart (or carretto siciliano in Italian) dates back from the early XIX century. It is not just a simple cart equipped with high wheels which enabled it to overcome the coarseness of the road in those days, when streets were full of hairpin bends and large natural trails with steep rises: It is an out-and-out work of art!

The cart was generally blue painted, with the images of Saints depicted on its side panels, the horse’s harness was ornamented with leather plates and gilded nails, its head was covered with a plume of  yellow and red, the colors of Sicily.
